MOVERS GO GREEN!

A Community Service Program for Charity

Perhaps someone within your group, congregation or charity has experienced a recent hardship and is in need of donations. Some members of The New Jersey Warehousemen and Movers Association (NJWMA) would like to offer help. Movers sometimes receive abandoned furniture, clothing, books, or miscellaneous household items. Many of these items are in good usable condition from consumers that had moved into a new home where the furniture did not fit, or from customers that placed goods into storage or realize that they no longer need the goods, so they abandon them. Moving companies usually to sell the furniture and abandoned storage lots at auction, and some companies even sell used furniture as a business. But because storage space is expensive and most moving companies are not in business to sell used furniture, manytimes this process is more of a nuisance, therefore good serviceable items may be just thrown into a dumpster and ends up in the landfill.

NJWMA members would like to help

Our association would like to connect the families that may need those items with the movers that would like to dispose of them. Our association does not charge for this service, nor do we become involved in any way with the parties. We will ask our participating members to contact you when they have good usable household items to donate and we will also set up a list of those movers on this website. Please note that the movers are not obligated to provide delivery of the donated items; you must arrangements to pick them up or to pay for delivery with the mover. We also will set up the list of participating charities that have contacted us. If our member company can help your people in need, then we have provided a community service. This is a new program that is just getting started so I am asking everyone for their help to make it work. This could benefit a lot of people in need and also reduce the amount of items placed in our landfills.

NJWMA member information

If your company disposes of furniture and household goods, there are people that may need your help. On June 1, 2008 NJWMA introduced a community service program called: NJWMA MOVERS GO GREEN; the program is designed to offer serviceable goods to needy organizations; these are the good items that are usually thrown away because it is not worth the effort to sell the items. Most movers that receive items, either sell them or trash them. If you agree to give them away, it will help people in your community at a time of need such as domestic violence, fire or financial ruin. Your company can help them become re-established in a new home, and they will always remember your community support. NJWMA has contacted hundreds of organizations throughout the state asking them if they are in need of used household goods and other items. Your participation as a mover does not obligate you to provide free moving services, only to offer free donations of good serviceable items (no junk please). We ask the charities to have the items picked up; if you are asked to provide delivery for an additional charge, we only ask that you offer a discount. We have set up this section on our website so your company can sign up as a source of the household goods (HHG) donations; the charitable organizations will sign up to contact these companies. Your company will be listed on our website as a sponsor to the community stating that you will provide used HHG at no charge to assist needy families.

Why you should get involved? Because it’s the right thing to do, it will reduce the waste that we send to our landfills, and it will help people in need. This program will work if you get involved!
