If it is too good to be true, it is!

Do not become a victim of a "moving scam."

What is a moving scam? That is where the price you are initially quoted seems too good to be true; it is a common tactic of disreputable and unlicensed movers.

They will give you an incredibly low estimate to lure you in, then significantly increase the price once your belongings are loaded onto the truck, holding them hostage until you pay the higher cost.

Key flags to avoid:

·   Low quote: The initial estimate will appear significantly cheaper than other moving companies.

·   No in-home inspection: The company might provide a quote without ever seeing your belongings, making it difficult to assess the moving costs accurately.

·   Hidden fees: Once the move begins, the crew will start to add unexpected additional charges for stairs, extra packing, difficult items, etc.

·   Pressure tactics: They will pressure you to pay the inflated price on the spot, claiming they cannot deliver your belongings until you do.

 How to protect yourself:

·   Get multiple quotes: Compare estimates from several reputable licensed moving companies.

·   In-home inspection: Always request an in-person or virtual estimate where the movers assess your belongings.

·   Read reviews: Check online reviews and Better Business Bureau ratings before hiring a moving company.

·   Ask questions: Clarify all costs, including any potential additional fees, before signing a contract.

What to do if you think you are being scammed:

·   Contact the company directly: Try to resolve the issue with the moving company before taking further action. If you do not get a satisfactory response, contact the New Jersey Warehouse and Movers Association, which can better guide you on your rights and where you can go to help resolve the issue.

·   File a complaint:  If the company refuses to cooperate, report them to the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs.
