The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has scheduled its annual International Roadcheck for May 13-15, 2025.

This 72-hour event is the largest targeted enforcement program for commercial motor vehicles in North America, with inspectors conducting an average of nearly 15 vehicle inspections every minute across Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Focus Areas for 2025

This year, the Roadcheck will emphasize two critical aspects:

  • Driver's Record of Duty Status (RODS): Inspectors will verify compliance with hours-of-service regulations by examining drivers' RODS for accuracy. They will look for issues such as electronic logging device tampering, "ghost drivers" (claiming a co-driver when none exists), improper use of personal conveyance, misuse of exceptions like adverse driving conditions, and recording off-duty time while performing work.
  • Tire Maintenance: Proper tire upkeep is vital for safety. Inspectors will assess tire tread depth, check for audible air leaks, identify flat tires, look for exposed belt material or casing ply in the tread or sidewall, detect tread or sidewall separation, identify bulges in the sidewall, spot improper repairs (such as rubber-coated plugs in the sidewall), and check for items lodged between dual tires.

    Inspection Process

During the Roadcheck, inspectors will primarily perform the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a comprehensive 37-step procedure that evaluates both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness. This includes checks of brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft components, driver's seat, fuel and exhaust systems, frames, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, wheels, rims, hubs, and windshield wipers. For passenger-carrying vehicles, inspections will also cover emergency exits, seating, and electrical systems.

    Consequences of Non-Compliance

Vehicles that pass inspection without critical violations may receive a CVSA decal, valid for up to three months. However, vehicles or drivers found with out-of-service violations will be restricted from operating until the identified issues are resolved.

    Preparation Recommendations

To prepare for the Roadcheck, drivers and carriers should:

    • Review and Update RODS: Ensure all duty statuses are accurately recorded and compliant with hours-of-service regulations.

    • Conduct Thorough Tire Inspections: Regularly check tire condition, including tread depth and proper inflation, and promptly address any damage or irregularities.

    • Perform Comprehensive Vehicle Maintenance: Regularly inspect and maintain all vehicle components to meet safety standards.
