MOTUS Compliance: What Every Motor Carrier Needs to Know

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has introduced Motus, its new online registration and compliance system, replacing several legacy registration platforms with one centralized portal. The goal is to simplify registration, improve security, reduce fraud, and make it easier for carriers to manage their federal operating information.

While Motus does not change the underlying regulations, it does change how motor carriers interact with FMCSA. Every carrier should become familiar with the new system before they need to make an update or complete a required filing.

What Can You Do in Motus?

Motor carriers can use Motus to:

• Apply for a new USDOT Number or operating authority.
• Complete required Biennial (MCS-150) Updates.
• Update company information, including business name and address.
• Add or modify operating authority.
• Reinstate or reactivate registrations.
• Track the status of pending registration actions.
• Manage who has authorized access to your company account.

Important Changes to Know

Motus introduces several changes that carriers should be aware of:

• Newly issued USDOT Numbers and operating authority numbers are now randomized to help reduce fraud. Existing USDOT and MC numbers are not changing.
• Each newly granted operating authority receives its own docket number and tracking history, making it easier to monitor specific authorities.
• USDOT Number suffixes may appear for companies newly registering through Motus. These suffixes are for identification purposes only and are not required vehicle markings.

Don't Wait Until the Last Minute

If your company anticipates making registration changes, completing a Biennial Update, or applying for new authority, it's a good idea to create your Motus account and verify your identity before you need it. Early users have reported that account setup and identity verification can take time, particularly during periods of heavy system use.
