Licensed and Insured and Why It Matters.

If my mover is a member in good standing of the New Jersey Warehouse and Mover’s Association (NJWMA), they are licensed and insured!  If your home, furnishings, or a mover is injured, there is coverage to make it right.  Your mover representative can explain your rights and answer questions at the time of the estimate/survey.  Licensed and Insured movers typically are more highly trained as well.  The laws and regulations of New Jersey govern them. 

I thought we’d have some fun with what could happen if they are NOT licensed, insured, or both.  Technically, you need to be licensed to be insured and insured to be licensed.  Oops, one more thing: THESE ARE NOT FUNNY WHEN THEY HAPPEN! 

1. The mover stumbles and falls when carrying the dresser and is hurt.
2. The mover backs over the lawn or mailbox of the house you are selling or the apartment you are leaving.
3. The mover causes an accident involving your household belongings on their rental/borrowed truck.
4. The mover trips and is injured while entering your house.
5. The mover demands another $800 before unloading the truck. 

These are not real businesses.  The rules don’t apply.  They typically have no ties to the community.  After too many problems, they move on.  Their trucks are not their own; they are rented or borrowed. 

In closing, being licensed and insured is expensive.  It costs real money.  Training happens because it helps reduce insurance costs.  Spend a few extra dollars now and save yourself the surprises, heartache, angst, liability, and potential additional costs!
