Tips for a Smooth Transition for Seniors
Ready to retire? Have mom, dad, or both developed some special needs that require them to move closer to you? Do your folks want to spend more time with their grandkids? Is it just time to be nearer to the family?
Let’s get ready to move! We’ve listed the house and have located our new home.
Long distance or local, the steps are really the same:
Be honest with your mover regarding your needs, what’s moving, and any expectations you may have…
Decide what you have room for and what you don’t furniture-wise. Label your boxes on the end panels, and by the room it’s going to. Your mover will have a more comprehensive list and likely have good information on senior moving.
The internet has many, many movers of all shapes and sizes. Some have insurance, some don’t. Some have a license to perform moves; some do not. Some have trucks, men, and warehouses, and some (drum roll) do not!
Let’s locate three reputable movers and ask them for a binding price on our move. You can contact your local state association (In New Jersey, we’re at www.njmovers.com). A member in good standing has all of the above! Select the one you’re most comfortable with. That is a good indicator of the service you’re likely to receive. Let them know your specific needs (Need to be out by 3 PM, can’t take delivery until 10 AM, Need it to be a Saturday, etc.) Some can accommodate it, and some may not be able to.
Finally, keep your cool on move day! It can be stressful for many different reasons for everyone. Bring in lunch for the movers (by the way, they eat a lot of pizza.) Stay relaxed and to the point, and you’ll have a terrific experience!
If you have any questions or concerns about your next move, contact the New Jersey Warehouse and Movers Association – njmovers.com.
