Understanding Moving Costs
When it comes to moving, understanding the cost is crucial. Moving can be stressful, and no one wants last-minute surprises.
When moving within New Jersey, movers are required to be licensed with the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. A licensed moving company will provide you with a pamphlet prior to your move, usually at the time of the cost estimate. “IMPORTANT NOTICE TO CONSUMERS USING PUBLIC MOVERS AND WAREHOUSEMEN”.
Using a member of the New Jersey Warehouse and Movers Association ensures that the company you are considering is licensed and insured. This assurance means the mover meets the highest standards, paving the way for a stress-free move.
Once you have narrowed down your search, it's important to know that the mover is required to survey your goods either physically or through electronic communication (such as FaceTime or Google Meet).
There are two types of estimates provided:
- Non-binding estimate: This is not a contract and does not obligate you to use that mover. However, the final charges may not be known until the move is complete, making it an open-ended price.
- Binding estimate: This is a contract that includes a calculated cost for the move and requires the mover to perform the move for the price shown on the binding estimate form. The benefit of a binding estimate is that you will know exactly what your move will cost for the services described.
With either type of estimate, be sure to receive a copy of the detailed inventory taken at the time of the survey. It is the consumer's responsibility to read the survey thoroughly and agree to it, which should eliminate any misunderstandings.
The common calculation of cost is based on hourly rates, weight, or cubic footage. Having an accurate inventory from the survey will protect you in the end. Additional costs, if requested, may include packing and valuation fees. If you choose to incorporate these, ensure they are clearly spelled out in your cost estimate.
Finally, to better understand your moving costs, read the “IMPORTANT NOTICE TO CONSUMERS USING PUBLIC MOVERS AND WAREHOUSEMEN”.
