Unexpected Issues on Moving Day: How to Stay Ahead

Even with the best planning, moving day can bring surprises. Most people expect the heavy lifting, but it’s the small, overlooked details that cause delays, extra costs, or stress.

 1.  Changes to the Move Plan

If dates, addresses, or delivery details change and the mover isn’t updated, it can cause major delays. This is especially true on long-distance moves where delivery schedules are carefully planned. If no one is available to receive the shipment, storage or rescheduling fees may apply.

Tip: Always confirm your availability and provide updated contact info. Communicate changes with your mover as early as possible.

 2.  More (or Fewer) Items Than Estimated

It’s common for customers to add furniture or boxes or forget items during the estimate. More items mean more time, labor, and sometimes a different truck size.

Tip: Keep your mover updated with an accurate inventory. If something changes, let them know right away.

 3.  Not Finished Packing

Unfinished packing is one of the biggest reasons moves run late. Last-minute boxing slows crews down and can lead to higher costs.

Tip: Start early and aim to finish the night before. If you’re short on time, ask about packing services.

 4.  Closing Delays

Real estate closings don’t always line up perfectly. Sometimes the sale of your old home and the purchase of your new one don’t close on the same day or the keys aren’t ready when the movers arrive. This leaves trucks full of belongings with nowhere to unload.

Tip: Stay in close contact with your realtor or attorney. If there’s a chance of delay, ask your mover about short-term storage options as a backup plan.

 5.  Forgotten Items

Attics, basements, sheds, and garages often get overlooked until after the truck leaves.

Tip: Do a final walkthrough with your movers before they pull away.

 Final Thoughts

Unexpected issues happen, but most can be avoided with clear communication and preparation. Update your mover on any changes, finish packing ahead of time, and work with licensed, insured professionals who know how to handle surprises.
